Last "knights" function at Southgate Mall for the opening of the "hot" ice rink was a singular experience. We had 5 Little Knights representing the club. The evening's events were opened by various dignitaries who spoke about the project to launch the synthetic ice rink as part of Ice Hockey South Africa's attempts to develop the sport. They are making a concerted effort to develop the sport to the Southern Part of Johannesburg.

The ice hockey players took the "ice" at 20:30 and played exhibition matches. The clubs who attended were Forest Knights, Pretoria Capitals, Ice Hawks and Vipers. Our Star Player of the evening was Joshua Grant, who scored 3 goals against the Viper Goalie.

Ice Hockey practice is hard work, but every once in a while, we have some time to goof around. Here we have Morne and Coetzee "Riding The Stick".

Commemoration of this event could not have come at an opportune time, when Africa is commemorating Africa month wherein calls for unity, reconciliation and peace is continuously echoed.

It is therefore befitting that this gesture of unity and reconciliation is commemorated at this memorable month. ‘Forgiveness is a sign of strength not weakness, this memorial service ceremony demonstrate character and strengths on the part of former sworn enemies ‘ says Freedom Park acting CEO Ms Jane Mufamadi.

Representatives of the SA National Military Veterans’ Association (SANMVA), APLA Military Veterans’ Association (MVA), AZANLA MVA, BDF MVA, the (ex-SADF) Council of Military Veterans’ Organizations (CMVO) and MK MVA, together with one representative each from the SANDF and the Department of Military Veterans, will conduct a joint wreath laying ceremony at Freedom Park and at Voortrekker Monument on the morning of the 31th May 2015.

After the wreath laying ceremony in Freedom Park, guests will depart to the SADF Wall of Remembrance at the Voortrekker Monument Heritage Site through the reconciliation road which was officially opened by President Zuma in 2011 for the main event.

“This event further recognizes our painful past we all had to endure as a nation whilst understanding that the future ahead can only be better shaped through unity, national building and reconciliation. It also clearly illustrates our joint commitment to support our men and women in uniform who serve the country all over Africa”, says Major General (Rtd) Gert Opperman.

“We are humbled and indeed honored to share this sacred space with veterans from all sides of the struggle for freedom who chose peace and reconciliation to shape the kind of society we all enjoy to live in today. It is through their heroic sacrifices including those who paid the ultimate price that South Africa is free from all forms of oppressions today”, says Ms Jane Mufamadi, Acting CEO of Freedom Park.

Joost van der Westhuizen J9 Fundraising Ice Hockey Penalty Shootout

Forest Rats vs Northgate Grizzlies (Development) Ice Hockey as part of the Joost van der Westhuizen J9 Foundation fundraiser. The game was played at The Ice Rink at Foresthill City Mall, Centurion.

Motor Neuron Disease is a fatal disease where your nerve cells (neurons) that control everything in your body deteriorate and die. This disease can happen to anybody at any time, as we have witnessed with Joost van der Westhuizen, an international rugby icon and legend.

What very Few people know is that Joost and Amor’s son, Jordan (number 9 for the Northgate Grizzlies) plays ice hockey. This sport is very near and dear to my heart. With all this in mind, we approached the J9 foundation to do this fundraiser to support this worthy cause.
